How can you diagnose TMJ?

TMJ is both the name for the temporomandibular joint and the range of disorders that affect it (The disorders are also known as TMD). The condition can be very painful for sufferers, and effective treatment might seem elusive at times. But a qualified neuromuscular dentist has tools to diagnose and treat this frustrating condition. If you suffer from TMJ, the northern Virginia TMJ dentists at Galleria Dental Aesthetics may be able to offer relief.

TMJ is associated with a fundamental misalignment of the bite. Over time, the up-and-down and side-to-side motion of the jaw wears down the joint. Healing TMJ, then, is often a matter of returning the jaw to a normal bite position.

We diagnose this disorder using two state-of-the-art technologies:

  • Our TENS unit (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) sends a mild electrical pulse into the muscles of the jaw. This makes your jaw fully relax, offering our experienced neuromuscular dentists the opportunity to find the neutral position.
  • The Myotronics K7 uses two small sensors to measure movement of the jaw, giving us a 3-D image of your jaw position.

Our TMJ diagnostic process may also include

  • X-rays
  • MRI
  • Electromyography
  • Sonography
  • CT scans

Once your TMJ disorder has been fully characterized, then we use that information to prescribe the TMJ treatment plan that’s right for you..

TMJ is a complex but treatable condition, and you don’t have to remain in pain. To schedule a diagnostic appointment with one of our northern Virginia TMJ dentists, please contact Galleria Dental Aesthetics today at 703-957-7069.
